Elephant, Amboseli

This 5-day Kenya safari, Amboseli National Park and Masai Mara adventure, brings together two of Kenya’s most iconic wilderness areas. Amboseli sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro and is famous for its large elephant herds open plains and postcard views of the snow crowned mountain. The Masai Mara is the realm of big cats endless grasslands and the Big Five. I designed this itinerary to balance exciting wildlife encounters with comfortable travel and time to soak in the landscape. I will handle every detail so that you can relax focus on the animals and enjoy the rhythm of the wild. Each day offers guided game drives photo opportunities and moments to connect with local culture and conservation.

Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

Elephant, Amboseli

I meet you after breakfast at your hotel in Nairobi and we begin our drive south toward Amboseli. As we leave the city the scenery opens into classic East African countryside. Small towns pass by and the silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro begins to rise on the horizon. We arrive at the park area by late morning or midday depending on traffic and road conditions and we check into our lodge or tented camp near the park. After lunch and a short rest we head out for our first game drive.

Crane, Amboseli

The first impression of Amboseli is one of space and light. The salt flats and seasonal swamps create a mosaic of habitats that draw wildlife from every direction. Elephants are the stars of Amboseli. You will often see family groups walking across the pans in single file with calves sheltered between adults. When the mountain reveals itself the scene becomes unforgettable.

Elephants

On our drive I will introduce you to the park’s layout major habitats and the movement patterns of key species. We will look for elephants zebras wildebeest giraffes and buffalo. Predators such as lions and cheetahs are present and often patrol the edges of the swamps where grazers concentrate. Birdlife is excellent with herons egrets crowned cranes secretary birds and raptors frequently seen. As the afternoon cools the warm light softens the plains and Kilimanjaro may clear for a perfect evening photograph. We return to camp for dinner and a restful night with the distant calls of hyenas and the occasional roar of a lion.

Day 2: Full day in Amboseli

Mount Kilimanjaro

We rise early for sunrise in Amboseli. The first light paints Kilimanjaro with a gentle glow and the animals are active in the cool air. This is one of the finest times to photograph elephants with the mountain behind them. We explore the marshes and open plains at an unhurried pace so that we can watch behavior rather than rush from sighting to sighting.

Antelopes, Amboseli

Amboseli’s elephants are remarkably relaxed around vehicles because of long running conservation work and careful guiding standards. I will point out family structures the roles of matriarchs and how the calves learn from the older females. In the wetlands we may see hippos submerged with only eyes and nostrils visible and a chorus of waterbirds feeding alongside them. If conditions allow we visit observation points that give sweeping views of the park and the mountain.

Zebras, Amboseli

By late morning we return to camp for breakfast and a break. You can rest by the pool review photographs or simply watch wildlife pass nearby. In the afternoon we head back into the park to follow new leads from the ranger network and other guides. We may track lions as they stir from shade search for cheetah scanning from termite mounds or wait at the edge of a swamp to watch elephants bathe and spray water over their backs. As golden hour arrives we position ourselves for beautiful light and calm reflections. We return to camp after sunset for dinner under the stars and share stories about the day’s highlights.

Day 3: Amboseli to Masai Mara

Wildebeest, Masai Mara

After an early breakfast we depart Amboseli and begin our journey to the Masai Mara. We can travel by road or we can include an optional internal flight depending on your preference. By road the journey reveals the variety of Kenyan countryside from volcanic hills to highland farms and market towns. If we include a flight I will coordinate transfers to and from the airstrips to keep the day relaxed and efficient.

Wildebeest and Zebras, Masai Mara

We reach the Masai Mara by early to mid afternoon. On arrival we settle into our lodge or tented camp then set out for an afternoon game drive. The Mara feels different from Amboseli. Here the grasslands roll in every direction and acacia trees stand like sentinels. The density of wildlife is remarkable and sightings often come quickly.

Lion

On this first Mara drive we focus on orientation and on finding the Big Five. We often see large prides of lions resting during the heat and growing active as the evening cools. Elephants move in family groups while buffalo graze in herds that darken the plain. Leopards live in the thickets and along riverlines and we watch carefully for their shapes in the branches. Rhinos are present yet elusive and we listen for reliable reports from the ranger network. We return to camp after sunset for dinner and a peaceful night.

Day 4: Full day in the Masai Mara

Giraffe, Masai Mara

We greet the day before sunrise to catch the first light as it spills over the plains. The early hours are prime time for predators and we may encounter lions on the move hyenas returning to their dens or cheetahs using the cool air to hunt. I combine knowledge of recent sightings animal behavior and the lay of the land to position us for the best opportunities while respecting park rules and the comfort of the animals.

Elephants, Masai Mara

If the season is right the great herds may be in the Mara and we will follow them from a respectful distance to witness the flow of wildebeest and zebras across the grassland. Even when the herds are elsewhere the Mara always delivers. Topi stand like sentries on mound tops eland move with quiet strength and giraffes trace elegant paths between acacias. Rivers such as the Talek and the Mara draw life to their banks and the birdlife is exceptional with rollers bee eaters raptors and storks adding color and motion.

Zebras, Masai Mara

We enjoy a picnic lunch at a shaded viewpoint so that we can remain out on the plains and take advantage of midday sightings. The afternoon is tailored to your interests. We may follow a pride with cubs spend time at a fig tree where a leopard was seen in the morning or explore a new corner of the reserve for variety. As the sun lowers we pause to take in the panorama and to reflect on the privilege of being present in this wild place. We return to camp for dinner and a restful night.

Day 5: Sunrise game drive and return to Nairobi

Giraffes, Masai Mara

We rise early for a gentle farewell drive to savor the Mara at dawn. This last outing often brings a final surprise such as a family of elephants in soft light or a cheetah scanning from a low ridge. We return to camp for breakfast then check out and begin our journey back to Nairobi. If you prefer to shorten travel time we can include a scheduled flight from the Mara back to Nairobi and I will arrange the airstrip transfer. By mid to late afternoon we arrive in the city and I drop you at your hotel or at the airport for your onward plans.

What to pack

Thoughtful packing keeps you comfortable and ready for every moment. Choose lightweight neutral colored clothing for daytime to blend with the environment and reduce heat. Include warm layers for cool mornings and evenings such as a fleece or light jacket. Comfortable closed toe walking shoes are important for lodge paths and short guided walks where permitted. Pack a wide brim hat sunglasses and high protection sunscreen. Bring insect repellent especially for evenings near wetlands.

A good pair of binoculars brings distant wildlife close and a camera with spare batteries and memory cards helps you capture special scenes. A power bank is handy for charging on long drives. Carry a reusable water bottle and any personal medications along with a small first aid kit. Travel documents and digital copies should be stored safely and easily accessible.

Travel tips

Carry some Kenyan shillings for small purchases and tips. Cards are accepted in many lodges and shops but cash is useful in remote areas. Kenya uses British style three pin plugs and 240 volt power so an adapter may be needed. Connectivity can be limited in parks and I encourage you to use this time to disconnect and enjoy the sounds of the bush. When we have opportunities to visit a Maasai community we will do so with respect and in ways that support local families. Purchasing crafts directly from artisans helps communities and strengthens conservation through shared benefits. Please ask before photographing people and be mindful of cultural norms in dress and behavior when outside the lodges.

Wildlife precautions

Your safety and the welfare of the animals guide everything we do. Please remain in the vehicle during game drives unless I confirm it is safe to step out in a designated area. Do not feed wildlife or attempt to approach animals on foot. Even calm looking animals can be unpredictable and sudden movements or loud sounds can create stress for them. We keep a respectful distance at all times and allow the animals to control the encounter.

At camp follow the guidance of staff especially after dark. Use a flashlight when walking between tents and public areas and avoid leaving food out on verandas. If you ever feel unsure call for assistance and I or a member of the camp team will help. By following these simple rules we protect both you and the wildlife.

Conservation notes

Tourism supports conservation through park fees community partnerships and direct employment. I choose lodges that invest in local people reduce waste and conserve water and energy.
